How to Target the Right Audience With Meta Ads
Practical guidance on building the right audience targeting for Facebook and Instagram ad campaigns.

Good targeting is the difference between ads that convert and ads that quietly burn through budget showing your business to people who were never going to buy.
Start with location. For most local businesses, this is the single most important filter — set a radius around your actual service area, not a broad province-wide target.
Layer in relevant interests, carefully. Interest targeting can help, but overly broad interests ("shopping," "business") add little value. More specific, relevant interests tend to perform better.
Use age ranges that match your real customers, not a generic 18–65 default.
Build a Custom Audience from your existing customers. Uploading a customer list (email/phone, handled securely through Meta's system) lets you build a "Lookalike Audience" — new people who share characteristics with your existing best customers.
Retarget website visitors. Anyone who visited your site but didn't convert is often your highest-value ad audience — they already showed interest once.
Avoid overlapping too many ad sets with similar targeting — this often causes Meta's system to compete against itself for the same audience, driving up costs unnecessarily.
Test, don't guess. Run two or three different audience segments with a small budget each, and let actual performance data tell you which to scale.
